Starting Thursday 17th September 2026
12 week term with a break for half term

Art Foundations
Drawing, Painting, Sketchbooks and Creative Practice
Designed for students in Year 7 and above, Art Foundations is a creative studio course that helps young artists develop the skills, confidence and artistic understanding needed to take their work to the next level.
Whether students are already considering GCSE Art, Textiles, Photography or Design subjects, or simply want to become stronger and more confident artists, this course provides an excellent foundation in creative practice while remaining enjoyable, inspiring and free from the pressures of school assessment.
Unlike many workshops that focus on a different project each week, Art Foundations encourages students to work more deeply and thoughtfully. Projects may develop over several weeks, allowing participants to explore ideas, experiment with materials, refine techniques and create more ambitious finished outcomes.
Working in sketchbooks and on larger pieces, students will learn how artists develop ideas, research themes, experiment with materials and build creative projects from initial inspiration through to finished artwork.
Throughout the course, students will:
Develop observational drawing skills and learn to draw with increasing confidence and accuracy.
Explore painting techniques using a variety of media and approaches.
Experiment with collage, mixed media, printmaking and contemporary art processes.
Learn how to create thoughtful and visually engaging sketchbook pages.
Develop research and visual investigation skills inspired by artists, designers and makers.
Explore both contemporary artists and influential figures from art history.
Learn how to generate, refine and develop creative ideas over time.
Build confidence in composition, colour, texture and visual storytelling.
Create finished artworks suitable for sketchbooks, portfolios and future creative studies.
Work on both short creative challenges and longer-term projects that encourage deeper artistic development.
Students will be introduced to a wide variety of artists, movements and creative disciplines, helping them discover new interests while developing their own artistic voice. Inspiration may come from contemporary culture, illustration, painting, photography, textiles, design, street art, sculpture and the world around us.
The course is particularly valuable for students who may wish to study creative subjects at GCSE and beyond, as it introduces many of the approaches, skills and ways of thinking used within successful art and design courses. However, there are no exams, homework or assessments - just an opportunity to develop creatively in a supportive and inspiring environment.
Suitable for all abilities, including complete beginners, Art Foundations is a place where young artists can experiment, take creative risks, develop technical skills and discover what kind of artist they want to become.
A strong creative future begins with strong foundations.
This is a unique course to Beth Morris Workshops that you won’t find anywhere else in Cardiff.
