A course for slightly older children to escape into a creative bubble for a short while. Time spent engaging with a creative activity has been well documented as imperative for mental health in young people. This is an opportunity for students to create in a relaxed environment without the pressure of exams and assessments.
Create Escape is a welcoming and imaginative sketchbook-based course designed especially for pupils in Years 5 and 6. As children prepare for the transition to high school, this class offers a chance to slow down, be creative, explore new ideas and build confidence through art and making.
At the heart of the course are creative journaling and sketchbooking. Students will fill their pages with drawings, doodles, colour experiments, collage, creative writing, visual storytelling and personal projects. They will be given their own dotted journals or sketchbooks and will learn how artists, illustrators and designers use sketchbooks as places to collect ideas, experiment and express themselves.
Throughout the course, students will:
Create exciting sketchbook pages and journal spreads.
Explore drawing, doodling and illustration techniques.
Experiment with collage, stickers, stencils, typography and mixed media.
Design mood boards, life-lists, wish lists and visual collections.
Learn how artists develop ideas and record inspiration.
Explore colour, pattern and composition through playful creative projects.
Discover artists, illustrators and designers from both the past and present.
Build confidence in expressing ideas visually while developing their own creative style.
Students will also explore drawing people, fashion-inspired illustration, favourite objects, characters and everyday interests, using art to tell stories about themselves and the world around them.
Textiles continue to play an important role within the course. Many schools are no longer offering textiles as an option, making this a wonderful opportunity to discover the creative possibilities of hand stitch. Students will learn how thread can be used as a drawing tool, experimenting with stitched words, decorative details, simple embroidery techniques and creative textile projects that encourage imagination and personal expression.
No two weeks are ever quite the same. One session might involve creating a colourful journal spread, another might focus on a collaborative artwork, a stitched project, an artist-inspired challenge or a creative response to a theme. The emphasis is always on enjoyment, exploration and building confidence through making.
All abilities are welcome, especially complete beginners. Skills will develop naturally over time, and students will gain experience using a wide range of materials, techniques and creative processes that will support their future transition to high school.
Most importantly, Create Escape is a place to create, imagine, experiment and enjoy being part of a community of young artists who love making things.
