Starting Tuesday 15th September 2026
12 week term with a break for half term
Taught by Beth Morris
Drawing Identity
People, Portraits, Style and Self-Expression
Taught by Beth Morris
Discover how artists use drawing to explore identity, personality and self-expression in this creative workshop for students in Year 7 and above.
Led by Beth Morris, author of the internationally acclaimed Fashion Illustrator, this course focuses on the art of drawing people and the things that make them unique. From faces and expressions to clothing, accessories, interests, cultures and personal style, students will learn how to observe, record and celebrate the people and influences that shape the world around them.
While fashion illustration remains an important part of the course, Drawing Identity goes far beyond clothing design. Students will explore portraiture, figure drawing and visual storytelling, learning how artists communicate character, mood and individuality through line, colour, composition and creative mark-making.
Throughout the course, students will fill their sketchbooks with observational studies, experimental techniques and personal projects inspired by contemporary culture, music, fashion, social trends, art, photography and everyday life. Whether drawing a favourite pair of trainers, a treasured object, a self-portrait, a musician, a friend, or a fashion-inspired figure, students will learn how visual details can help tell a story about who we are.
Throughout the course, students will:
Learn to draw faces, features and expressions with increasing confidence.
Explore body proportions, posture, movement and figure drawing.
Study different body shapes and learn to draw people in a variety of poses.
Develop fashion illustration techniques and understand how clothing can communicate personality and identity.
Draw accessories, trainers, hairstyles, jewellery and personal objects that help tell visual stories.
Experiment with colour, texture, pattern and mixed-media techniques.
Create sketchbook pages, mood boards and visual research inspired by contemporary culture.
Explore artists, illustrators, photographers and designers whose work focuses on people and identity.
Build confidence in observational drawing, working from life, photographs and imagination.
Develop a personal artistic style while learning strong technical drawing skills.
This course is particularly valuable for students studying, or considering studying, Art, Textiles, Fashion, Photography or Design subjects at school. The skills developed here will strengthen observational drawing, creative thinking and visual communication, providing an excellent foundation for future creative studies.
Most importantly, this is a space where young artists can create for enjoyment, curiosity and self-expression. There are no exams, homework or assessments - just the opportunity to experiment, explore ideas and develop confidence alongside other creative young people.
Suitable for all abilities, including complete beginners. Whether your interests lie in portraiture, fashion, illustration, contemporary culture or simply becoming better at drawing people, Drawing Identity will help you develop the skills to observe the world around you and express your own unique perspective through art.
Because every person has a story worth drawing.
