Finding Your Painting Style

Fridays 5:30-6:45

age 11-18 secondary

Starting Friday 19th September

12 week term with a break for half term

Taught by Amanda Turner

Finding Your Painting Style is the ultimate Friday night escape for secondary school students—a chance to leave the school day behind and jump headfirst into the joy of painting. It’s a course that builds skills without pressure, where students can experiment freely, explore different techniques and materials, and most importantly, discover a genuine love for art. Before you even realise it, you’ll be growing in confidence, developing your own unique style, and falling completely in love with the process of painting. With a relaxed, social atmosphere, loads of laughter, and plenty of paint-splattered fun, this class offers exactly what every young artist needs: freedom, creativity, and the chance to experience art as it’s meant to be—messy, expressive, and totally your own.

During this course not only will you learn the basics of oil painting, but you’ll also be supported to find your own artistic voice and style. You’ll learn the skills necessary to get you started on your artistic journey. This is the ultimate course for any budding artist, and will support their school studies and beyond.

The starting point will always be research and drawing…then through experimentation with different subject matters, styles, and techniques, you’ll find your own unique way of capturing the world. You will learn the basics of colour theory and colour mixing. We’ll look to other artists throughout history for inspiration but there will also be a focus on your own interests and outlook.

You’ll go on your own journey of artistic discovery within a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment. Amanda will be there throughout to offer plenty of assistance and guidance.

As our young painting community builds, we’ll all talk about the same things at the beginning each week and do similar rough experiments, but then everyone will go in their own directions. For example, one week we might be playing around with colour. How do different colours make you feel? Which colour palettes are you drawn to in other artists' work. We'll look at some images, and experiment to see how we feel about the questions. Some students might have already decided that they love landscapes and others that they love portraits...or abstract....so your colour experiments can be done within those areas.

Through going on your own journeys we hope that you’ll build in confidence. It'll make you less likely to compare your work to others. It'll be very much about self discovery. There are so many factors that make up an artist's individual style and so many things you can play with and think about to discover your own style.

By the end of the 12 weeks you will have the chance to work on your own paintings and get closer to discovering your own visual language. All supplies will be provided, including water mixable oil paints. This course is suitable for all abilities. This is an excellent course for any students thinking of taking art GCSE, A-Level or who just want to paint for pleasure.
