Foundations, Techniques and Creative Practice

Taught by Amanda Turner

For young artists who are serious about developing their painting skills, Oil Painting Studio offers the perfect opportunity to build confidence, technical ability and creative independence through the exciting medium of oil paint.

This engaging and supportive course introduces students to the fundamental skills every painter needs, while encouraging them to develop their own artistic interests and visual style. Whether you’re considering future studies in Art, GCSE, A-Level or simply have a passion for painting, this course provides an excellent foundation for your creative journey.

Working with water-mixable oil paints, students will explore a wide range of techniques, subjects and approaches to painting. The first part of the course focuses on building strong foundations through a series of practical painting challenges and skill-based exercises. Students will learn how painters think, observe and solve creative problems while developing confidence with materials and techniques.

Throughout the course, students will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of oil painting and how to use materials safely and effectively.

  • Develop confidence in colour mixing and colour theory.

  • Explore tone, light, shadow, shape and form.

  • Learn techniques for creating depth, perspective and composition.

  • Experiment with mark-making, brushwork and painterly techniques.

  • Study portraiture, landscape, still life and contemporary painting approaches.

  • Explore the work of both historic master painters and contemporary artists.

  • Create sketchbook studies, colour investigations and preparatory work that support larger paintings.

  • Develop observational skills through drawing and research.

  • Learn how artists develop ideas from initial studies through to finished artworks.

During the second half of the course, students will apply the skills they have developed to a more substantial personal painting project. This longer-term piece will allow them to revisit techniques, refine their ideas and experience the rewarding process of developing a painting over several weeks.

Amanda’s teaching combines practical instruction with encouragement to explore individual interests and creative choices. While everyone will work through similar exercises and challenges, students will be encouraged to respond in their own way, helping them build confidence as independent artists.

The course strikes a balance between structured learning and creative freedom. One week might focus on mastering colour relationships, another on understanding portrait painting, while another explores contemporary approaches to landscape. Every project is designed to strengthen technical skills while encouraging personal expression.

Suitable for all abilities, including complete beginners, this course is particularly valuable for students wishing to strengthen their painting skills, build a portfolio of work and develop a deeper understanding of fine art practice. Many of the studies and projects produced throughout the course can support future GCSE and A-Level coursework, while also helping students develop the confidence and skills needed to progress as painters.

Most importantly, this is a place to paint, experiment, take creative risks and enjoy the process of making art alongside other young artists who share your enthusiasm.

Every accomplished painter starts with strong foundations.
