The Art of Stitch
Wednesday 5:30-6:45
11-18 secondary
Starting Wednesday 17th September
12 week term with a break for half term -
Taught by Sally Durham
Explore the wonderfully expressive world of fabric and thread, where students are encouraged to explore, play, and push boundaries. From ripping and dyeing to stitching, weaving, and embellishing, learners get hands-on with a range of exciting techniques that bring textiles to life in bold, contemporary ways. We look at inspiring artists who use stitch and embroidery in imaginative, unconventional forms, and take the time to develop our own ideas into finished products—always with a strong emphasis on creativity over perfection.
This is a class where the needle becomes your drawing tool, and the fabric your canvas—so take a needle for a walk and see where it leads. With a warm, friendly atmosphere and a shared love for all things tactile, it’s a great place to build confidence, develop practical skills, and enjoy thoughtful tuition in a subject that often gets overlooked in schools. You will be able to make things that matter to you. Expect laughter, connection, and lots of beautiful mess.
This textiles club for young people of secondary school age is unique in the fact that it does not follow a curriculum. But, enhances the students experience alongside their school work without even realising it. You will be shown techniques and how to use materials creatively to improve on your artistic/textile knowledge. Imagine it as an after school club where you learn and are inspired by your tutor and your peers, but also chat about what you’re watching on TV or the next concert you want to attend! The conversations around the table are fantastic!
The great thing about this course is it is very much textiles for pleasure. There are no exams, homework or assessments. It is a place where students come to enjoy creating without limitations or pressure.
