The Zorn Palette - Portrait Painting in Oils with Amanda Turner
13th June 2027
Sunday
10:00-4:00
Adult workshop (but GCSE and A-Level students are very welcome to book too. It will be a great skills workshop for those taking art)
Workshop Description:
We are so happy to offer another opportunity to spend a full day painting with our incredibly popular resident artist and tutor, Amanda Turner. With all of Amanda's weekly painting courses fully booked, this special one-day workshop is a wonderful chance to experience her inspiring teaching, develop your oil painting skills and discover the remarkable possibilities of working with a limited colour palette.
Taking inspiration from the celebrated Swedish painter Anders Zorn, we'll explore his famous four-colour palette and discover how an extraordinary range of colours, tones and subtle variations can be created using just ivory black, titanium white, yellow ochre and cadmium red.
Zorn was renowned for his beautiful portraits and extraordinary understanding of light, colour and skin tones. His limited palette demonstrates how a carefully chosen selection of pigments can produce surprisingly rich and sophisticated results, particularly when painting the human face.
We'll begin the day by exploring a little of the history behind the Zorn palette, looking at colour theory and discovering how these four simple pigments work together. Under Amanda's expert guidance, you'll experiment with mixing your own colour chart, exploring warm and cool tones, subtle greys, earthy shades and the wonderful variety of skin tones that can be achieved.
Once you've developed an understanding of the palette, you'll put your new knowledge into practice, creating an oil-painted portrait inspired by Zorn's approach to colour and tonal values.
Amanda will guide you through the process of observing light and shadow, building form, mixing accurate skin tones and applying paint with confidence. You'll discover how limiting your colours can actually give you greater control over your painting, helping you concentrate on the relationships between tone, colour and form.
Whether you're relatively new to oil painting or already have some experience, this is a fantastic opportunity to develop your technical understanding, challenge your approach to colour and enjoy a day immersed in portrait painting.
You'll leave with a painted portrait, a carefully developed colour chart and, most importantly, a greater understanding of how just four colours can open up a whole world of painting possibilities.
A wonderful opportunity to learn from one of our most popular tutors, experiment with a fascinating historical painting technique and discover the power of a limited palette.

They are genuine oil paints but can be thinned and brushes washed with water rather than mineral spirits or turps. Perfect for a group working within a shared studio space. All supplies are provided. Just bring yourself and wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on, or wear an apron.
