Fashion Sketchbooks: Design Development and ideas with Thom Botwood
Sunday 24th January 2027
10:00-4:00
Adult workshop (but GCSE and A-Level students are very welcome to join in. It will be a great skills workshop for those taking creative subjects)
WORKSHOP:
We're delighted to welcome the incredibly talented Thom Botwood back to the studio for another inspiring day of drawing, design and creative exploration. A professional illustrator, fashion designer and character designer for film, Thom brings an extraordinary wealth of industry experience, having worked on major productions including Cruella, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Beetlejuice.
With a First Class Honours degree in Fashion Design, his own fashion label and a career spanning costume, fashion illustration and film, Thom has a fascinating understanding of how creative ideas develop from initial inspiration into finished designs. His work on Cruella, including creating the drawings seen on screen, offers a wonderful insight into the relationship between fashion, character and storytelling.
This exciting, hands-on workshop will take you behind the scenes of the fashion design process, exploring how designers research, gather inspiration and develop their ideas through creative sketchbook work.
Thom will begin by sharing his own creative journey, showing examples from his professional portfolio and explaining how research, experimentation and visual storytelling influence his work in fashion and film.
Then it's your turn to get creative! You'll explore ways of gathering and developing inspiration, experimenting with drawing, collage, colour, composition and design development. With a particular focus on pattern, print and textiles, you'll explore fabrics and consider how these might translate into fashion and costume designs.
Working with a variety of materials and techniques, including light pads, layout paper, stencils, cutting techniques and colour media, Thom will encourage you to experiment, take risks and develop your own visual language. You'll explore how professional designers use sketchbooks not simply to record ideas, but as exciting spaces for investigation, experimentation and creative thinking.
You're very welcome to bring along an existing sketchbook or fashion project that you'd like to develop, or start something completely new with Thom's guidance.
This workshop is particularly valuable for GCSE and A-level Art, Textiles and Fashion students, as well as those preparing portfolios for further education, university or a career in the creative industries. Equally, it's a fantastic opportunity for adults with an interest in fashion, illustration and design to learn directly from someone working professionally in the industry.
A day packed with inspiration, practical techniques and fresh creative thinking, helping you discover how to take an initial idea and develop it into something exciting, individual and full of possibilities.
Artist / Maker / Tutor:
Thom Botwood is a creative designer and illustrator whose work bridges film, fashion and fine art. Based in Wales, he is known for his expressive pen-and-ink illustrations and his ability to capture character through posture, gesture and costume.
Thom is well known for his work as “Disney’s hand of Cruella, and costume illustrator .’ Thom has built a career collaborating with major costume designers and studios including Jenny Beavan, Colleen Atwood, Disney, Warner Bros., and Universal. His film credits include Cruella (2021), Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), where his concept illustrations helped define the look and personality of on-screen characters.
Alongside his film work, Thom founded Pin & Thimble, an independent clothing and tailoring label. His eye for structure and silhouette runs through both his tailoring and his illustration, each line drawn with the same precision and flair.
Thom’s unique illustration work hangs in the Savoy Hotel in London, celebrating their iconic famous diners of past and present.
His workshops offer a rare insight into the crossover between drawing, costume and storytelling. Participants are invited to explore pen-and-ink techniques, study character through fashion and film references, and develop their own expressive style under Thom’s guidance.
“Every line tells a story,” Thom says. “The way a character stands, moves or wears their clothes reveals everything you need to know about them.”
Thom’s approach is generous, engaging and full of creative energy - a chance to learn from a professional who works where art, story and style meet.
