WORKSHOP:

Folk Inspired Covered Box with Anne Kelly

A day of stitch, stories and slow making

Join Anne Kelly for a beautifully creative workshop inspired by her celebrated Folk series, a body of work that honours heritage, memory and the beauty of everyday materials.

During the day, you’ll create your own fabric-covered box, drawing on Anne’s distinctive layered textile style. You’ll explore a mix of hand-stitch, collage and embellishment, working with recycled and vintage fabrics, printed papers, and meaningful scraps that tell your own story.

You’re welcome to bring along any unfinished stitch projects or personal fragments - a piece of embroidery, a section of old linen, lace, or a photograph to weave into your box design. Anne will gently guide you through building layers, adding texture and composing your piece, turning the familiar and forgotten into something beautiful and new.

This will be a relaxed, sociable workshop, filled with conversation, creativity and connection - the kind of day where stories unfold as you sew, and every mark carries meaning.

By the end of the session, you’ll have a hand-stitched, folk-inspired keepsake box - part artwork, part memory holder, and a renewed sense of joy in making by hand.

Anne says: “I love to honour and repurpose old textiles, using hand and machine embroidery, vintage thread and string to add texture and character. My work has been described as 'small worlds' trapping and preserving pieces of embroidery and objects within it.”

Artist / Maker / Tutor:

Anne is an award-winning textile artist, author and tutor based in the UK, exhibiting and teaching internationally. She received a Fine Art degree in Canada and was awarded two consecutive Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grants to travel to the UK, continuing her studies at Goldsmiths College in London.

Her six books for Batsford represent her project and collaborative work. Anne’s heavily embroidered fabric collages are reminiscent of tapestry work and her signature stitching technique is applied to a variety of surfaces. She uses mixed media and print to further embellish her work. Anne ‘s work is represented in private and public collections in the UK and abroad.

Her major solo exhibition at Ruthin Craft Centre in 2021 ‘Well Travelled’, was described by ‘Embroidery’ magazine as ‘a delight to behold’. This exhibition toured to the Harley Foundation Gallery in Welbeck. She has had solo and two person exhibitions in France, the Czech Republic, Australia and Canada. She is listed in the Crafts Council Directory, and a member of the Embroiders’ Guild UK, the European Textile Network and the Society for Embroidered Work.

What is included in the ticket price?

Most equipment and materials that you need for the workshop are included, but you will find a deeper connection to your work if you bring some of your own pieces.

Please bring your own shallow and sturdy box, card or wood, jewellery, sweets or cigar. Shoeboxes are too big for a one day workshop. The box needs to be robust not thin card. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available all day.
