Workshop Description:

We are absolutely delighted to welcome the wonderfully talented Jessie Chorley back to our studio for another very special weekend of creativity. Jessie has become a much-loved regular guest artist at Beth Morris Workshops, and her visits are always something we look forward to. There is something quite magical about the way Jessie's distinctive style, gentle approach and creative personality fill the studio. For the weekend, we become completely immersed in Jessie's world of vintage fabric, thread, storytelling and treasured memories.

This beautiful workshop focuses on Jessie's unique style of hand-embroidered storytelling, using fabric and thread to bring new life and meaning to much-loved items of clothing and homeware.

Under Jessie's guidance, you'll be encouraged to work intuitively, exploring a range of embroidery stitches alongside darning techniques, needle-turned appliqué and reverse appliqué. Jessie will demonstrate these techniques at different stages throughout the workshop, allowing plenty of time to experiment, develop your ideas and relax into the gentle rhythm of stitching.

Before the workshop, enjoy choosing an item of clothing or homeware to bring along. Perhaps a favourite linen shirt, a cotton dress, a tablecloth or something that has been tucked away in a drawer waiting for a new lease of life. Cotton and linen fabrics work particularly well, while dolls' clothes and children's clothing can also be wonderful pieces to explore.

Whether you have a personal story to tell, a family memory to celebrate or simply wish to enjoy learning and experimenting in Jessie's company, this carefully curated workshop welcomes all levels of experience.

Jessie will begin by sharing a selection of her own beautifully embroidered clothing and tablecloths, offering a fascinating insight into her creative process and the stories behind her work.

You'll then receive one of Jessie's specially prepared inspiration kits, an essential part of the workshop, before using her signature cut-and-trace templates to draw motifs directly onto your chosen fabric. Specialist pens and chalk pencils will be provided. This gentle, structured starting point allows you to spend the remainder of your time developing your embroidery with Jessie's individual guidance and encouragement.

Throughout the workshop, you'll discover how Jessie incorporates found objects, pre-loved fabrics and personal treasures into her embroidery. You're warmly encouraged to bring along small pieces of meaningful fabric, precious buttons, ribbons or other keepsakes if you'd like to explore this approach. A pearl button might become the centre of a flower, or a piece of blue silk ribbon could find its place within a beautifully stitched sky. These little details can add wonderful layers of memory and meaning to your work.

There is absolutely no expectation to finish your piece during the workshop. Embroidery is a slow and thoughtful process, and Jessie encourages everyone to enjoy the experience of making, experimenting and learning without rushing. Your piece can continue to grow and develop long after the weekend has ended.

Above all, this is an opportunity to spend precious creative time in the company of a truly inspiring artist, surrounded by beautiful materials, shared stories and the simple pleasure of stitching by hand.

We cannot wait to welcome Jessie back and see her wonderful creative world come to life in our studio once again.

Artist / Maker / Tutor:

Jessie Chorley is a London-based textile artist, specializing in contemporary illustrative embroidery and simple patching techniques. Born in kent in 1980, she spent her childhood in north Wales. The traditional technical skills and hands-on approach that she celebrates in her work today were passed down to her from her own family of makers.

While still a student – studying for a BA in Fine Art Textile practice at Goldsmiths college, London she chose to dedicate her life to making beautiful things and, shortly after graduating, she set up her own business as a full-time artist, designer and maker. Over time, she has also become a tutor, social artist and author, as well as running a shop and studio selling her work in East London from 2007 to 2021.

Jessie now runs her business from her private South London studio. She regularly delivers masterclasses from there, as well as at venues worldwide.

Words from Jessie:

Please note that as an embroidery teacher, I am always prepared with my fully stocked class kit, which is intended for your use as my student. My kit includes my specialist embroidery threads, ribbons, strings, templates, embroidery needles, scissors and small assorted fabric scraps. Therefore, if you can’t bring materials (apart from your garment or tablecloth) or personal items to the class, you are welcome to share and use my kit with other students.

I look forward to sewing with you!

Jessie Chorley

Please enjoy gathering items from the list below:

  • A beloved garment or tablecloth. You could also bring a cushion, bag or a small curtain.

  • Your favourite embroidery needles, sewing tools and your own little scissors.

  • An assortment of embroidery threads you enjoy working with. Stranded or pearl threads are ideal. I favour DMC or Anchor threads.

  • A range of lightweight fabric scraps. Larger pieces (20cm x 20cm) are good if you wish to use my purpose-made templates to cut out horse, rabbit, cat, tree, moon, star, house, cloud shapes. Smaller pieces of fabric are perfect for adding appliquéd detail to garments, tablecloths, cushions and bags.

  • Pieces of plain linen or cotton fabrics. Vintage tablecloths, tray cloths, hankies and linen napkins are also suitable materials for this class. They are great for adding to cuffs and hems.

  • Small items that could be stitched into your work, such as charms, buttons, vintage lace, ribbons, small metal keys, or small pieces of jewellery.

  • Is there a memory, life event, an aspect of your family history, a poem, or simply an inspiring word that might inspire you and your sewing during this class?

  • Fabric or threads to share with people in your class.

  • Finally, feel free to bring along any Jessie Chorley embroidery templates in progress or those you have finished. I am always happy to help and I love to see your versions of my projects!
