Workshop Description:

A Two-Day Cyanotype Printing & Embroidery Workshop with Guest Artist Hannah Lamb

We are absolutely delighted to welcome renowned textile artist Hannah Lamb to Beth Morris Workshops for the very first time, for what promises to be a fascinating two days exploring the beauty and history of textiles through cyanotype printing and hand embroidery.

Hannah is known for her thoughtful exploration of historical textiles, combining traditional techniques with contemporary textile art. Her fascination with the stories held within old fabrics, together with her extensive experience as a practising textile artist, forms the heart of her teaching. We can't wait to welcome her into our studio and share her extraordinary knowledge and creative approach.

Over two inspiring days, you'll discover how to bring together the beautiful photographic qualities of cyanotype printing with the delicate, expressive marks of hand stitching, using historical textiles and treasured objects as your inspiration.

On the first day, Hannah will introduce you to the magical process of cyanotype printing, exploring how to safely create beautiful blue-and-white impressions from historical artefacts onto fabric. You'll experiment with composition, layering and the wonderful details found in old textiles, as well as discovering how to tone cyanotype prints to create softer, sepia-coloured results.

The second day will focus on the art of hand embroidery. Taking inspiration from historical textiles, you'll study the marks, patterns, textures and details within these beautiful objects and explore how to translate them into stitch. Under Hannah's expert guidance, you'll begin adding layers of embroidery to your cyanotype prints, bringing together two wonderful techniques to create a truly individual piece of textile art.

There is something incredibly special about using objects and fabrics that carry a sense of history, allowing their patterns and details to inspire something completely new. Hannah will encourage you to observe closely, experiment freely and develop your own creative response.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have a unique textile artwork well underway, along with a wealth of new techniques, inspiration and ideas to continue exploring at home.

Suitable for all abilities, although some previous experience of hand stitching would be helpful. All materials and equipment will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring along suitable objects for printing, as well as any historical textiles they might like to study. A list of suggested items will be shared nearer the workshop. You're also welcome to bring your own sewing kit, and we recommend wearing an apron or old clothes.

A wonderful opportunity to spend two days immersed in Hannah's creative world, learning directly from an inspiring textile artist and discovering how the beauty of historical fabrics can be reimagined through print and stitch.

Artist / Maker / Tutor:

Hannah Lamb is a textile artist, lecturer and author based in Bingley, West Yorkshire. Working across stitch, print and fabric manipulation, she creates textile works ranging from intimate objects to large-scale installations. Her practice is centred on an ongoing dialogue with cloth, examining its ability to carry traces of care, labour and lived experience with sensitivity. Drawing on archives, textile heritage and site-responsive research, she investigates the relationships between material, memory and place.

Notable commissions and collaborations include Lasting Impressions (2016 and 2017) with Claire Wellesley-Smith at Salts Mill, Fragment of a Dress for the Brontë Parsonage Museum (2022), and A Cloth for The Lost Mills (2024), created with Hannah Robson for 509 Arts. She is particularly interested in working within historic buildings and post-industrial environments, where the character and histories of a site become an active layer in the work. Hannah has exhibited widely, including The British Textile Biennial, Midland Arts Centre (MAC) and The Crafts Study Centre, and is a member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists.

Alongside her artistic practice, Hannah is an educator, lecturer and author. She leads the FdA and BA Textiles Practice programmes at Bradford School of Art and regularly delivers lectures, and masterclasses for museums, universities and arts organisations, including Gawthorpe Hall, FibreArts Australia, Harewood House, De Montfort University, The Textile Study Group and the 62 Group. Her current work continues to investigate the cultural histories embedded within cloth through collaborative and site-responsive projects.

Hannah is the author of Poetic Cloth: Creating Meaning in Textile Art and Unfolding Cloth: Inspiration from Historical Textiles.
