Workshop Description:

A Two-Day Contemporary Quilting Workshop with Guest Artist Sophie Snow

We are absolutely delighted to welcome talented textile designer and quilter Sophie Snow to Beth Morris Workshops for a very special two-day workshop exploring the wonderful world of contemporary quilting, colour, pattern and storytelling through fabric.

In this inspiring workshop, you'll discover how quilting can become a form of textile art, transforming simple pieces of fabric into beautiful, imagined landscapes full of personality, texture and meaning.

Working with Sophie, you'll begin by exploring ideas for your own miniature landscape, taking inspiration from the natural world, favourite places or perhaps a landscape that holds a special memory. Sophie will guide you through simplifying your ideas into achievable compositions, considering how shapes, colours and contrasting patterns can work together to tell a story.

You'll then explore the traditional technique of needle-turn appliqué, carefully layering and stitching your chosen fabrics to build your landscape. This beautiful hand-sewing technique has long been used in quilt making, allowing shapes to be applied to a background fabric with softly turned, almost invisible edges.

You'll also discover how to introduce expressive, loose Kantha-inspired stitching to add texture, movement and detail to your work. These gentle running stitches can suggest rolling hills, shifting skies, fields, pathways or the contours of a landscape, bringing your composition to life.

Throughout the two days, Sophie will encourage you to experiment with a wonderful selection of fabrics, playing with colour, pattern, texture and scale. You'll discover how even the simplest shapes can create striking compositions, and how combining patterned and plain fabrics can give your work a wonderfully individual character.

There will be plenty of time to enjoy the slow, thoughtful process of hand stitching, with Sophie's expert guidance helping you develop your ideas and build confidence in your techniques. Whether you're inspired by the Welsh countryside, a favourite coastal view or an entirely imagined landscape, your finished piece will be a personal interpretation of a place or memory.

As your miniature quilt takes shape, you'll learn how to bring the layers together and finish your piece with a neatly bound edge, creating a beautiful textile artwork ready to frame or hang directly on your wall.

Suitable for those new to quilting as well as more experienced stitchers, Sophie will guide you through each stage, helping you create a design that is achievable within the two days.

You'll leave with your very own miniature quilted landscape, a unique piece of textile art that celebrates colour, pattern, storytelling and the pleasure of making something entirely by hand.

Artist / Maker / Tutor:

We are delighted to introduce Sophie Snow, a talented textile designer and quilter based in the beautiful coastal village of St Dogmaels, West Wales. Sophie's distinctive work brings together her professional background in fashion and print design with a deep appreciation for traditional craft, contemporary quilting and the extraordinary landscapes that surround her home.

Having spent over a decade working in the fashion industry as a print designer, Sophie returned to her own creative practice with a desire to reconnect with the joy of making by hand. Her work celebrates colour, shape, pattern and texture, combining her understanding of design with the freedom and individuality of creating one-of-a-kind textile pieces.

Inspired by the ever-changing Welsh landscape, Sophie explores the relationship between place, memory and storytelling through quilting. Her work begins with observations of the natural environment, from the colours and contours of the land to the quiet details that might otherwise go unnoticed. These observations gradually develop into imagined landscapes, where layers of fabric, carefully considered colour and expressive compositions create deeply personal visual stories.

For Sophie, quilting is much more than a traditional textile technique. It is an opportunity to slow down, notice the world around us and capture a moment in time. Each piece becomes a unique interpretation of a place, a memory or a feeling, beautifully translated into fabric and stitch.

Sophie's work also draws on hand appliqué, traditional stitching techniques and the use of linen, cotton and block-printed fabrics, bringing a contemporary freshness to the heritage of quilt making. Her playful use of colour and thoughtful approach to composition make her pieces instantly engaging, while the stories and observations behind them invite us to look a little closer.

Sophie's talent has received recognition at Craft Festival Wales in Cardigan, where she won both the Oriel Myrddin Showcase Award and the Peer Award in 2025. Her work was also featured at Oriel Myrddin Gallery during summer 2026, celebrating her distinctive approach to contemporary textiles.
