A Dictionary of Stitches Masterclass with Jennifer Collier
30th and 31st October 2027
Saturday and Sunday
10:00-4:00
Adult workshop
Workshop Description:
A Two-Day Stitching Masterclass with Guest Artist Jennifer Collier
We are absolutely delighted to welcome the wonderfully talented Jennifer Collier back to Beth Morris Workshops for another inspiring weekend of creativity. Jennifer has been a much-loved guest artist at our studio for many years, sharing her extraordinary ability to transform paper, vintage ephemera and found materials through the art of stitch. Having created some incredible pieces together over the years, we're particularly excited to spend two whole days exploring and developing the beautiful techniques of hand stitching on paper.
In this fascinating masterclass, Jennifer will guide you through creating your very own Dictionary of Stitches, a beautiful and practical collection of stitched samples and techniques that you can continue to explore long after the workshop has finished.
You'll begin with the basics of stitching on paper, building confidence with needle and thread while discovering Jennifer's invaluable tips and tricks. As your skills develop, you'll progress to some of her favourite techniques, including decorative edging stitches, intricate insertion stitches and the fascinating art of Medieval Mending, using stitch to repair and reconnect pieces of paper.
Throughout the two days, Jennifer will encourage you to experiment with different threads, papers and stitching techniques, creating a collection of samples that will be brought together in your very own sketchbook. Your Dictionary of Stitches will become a wonderful reference book, filled with inspiration and practical techniques that you can continue adding to at home.
Whether you've attended one of Jennifer's previous workshops or are discovering the possibilities of paper stitching for the first time, this is a fantastic opportunity to develop new skills, experiment and enjoy two days completely immersed in the art of stitch.
All materials and equipment will be provided, including prepared fabrics and papers. You're welcome to bring a basic sewing kit with your favourite threads, and please remember your glasses if you need them for close work!
Artist / Maker / Tutor:
Jennifer Collier is an internationally recognised artist and a true pioneer in the world of paper and stitch. Her exquisite sculptures and intricate artworks are created using vintage and recycled materials, combining traditional textile techniques with a contemporary twist. The papers themselves provide both the inspiration and the materials for her work, with their history and hidden narratives suggesting the forms they take. Through this extraordinary marriage of unlikely materials, old papers are transformed into something truly unique, delicate and complex, giving new life to things that might otherwise be discarded.
More recently, Jennifer has developed a particular passion for researching and preserving rarely used and almost-forgotten heritage embroidery stitches. Supported by funding from Arts Council England, she has dedicated time to rediscovering these traditional techniques and exploring how they can be translated onto paper, ensuring that this important part of our creative heritage is preserved and passed on to future generations.
This fascinating research has also led to the publication of Jennifer's own Stitchionary: A Dictionary of 26 Basic Hand Stitches, a beautifully illustrated guide sharing traditional embroidery techniques, practical instructions and her specialist knowledge of stitching on paper. Jennifer is a true expert in bringing historical embroidery into the contemporary world, making traditional skills exciting, relevant and accessible to today's makers.
Jennifer graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1999 with a BA (Hons) in Textiles, specialising in Print, Knit and Weave. Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in over 100 magazines and 17 books. She has also worked with prestigious institutions including the V&A, Tate Liverpool and Manchester Art Gallery, and runs her own creative gallery and workshop space, Unit Twelve, in Staffordshire.
A much-loved returning guest artist at Beth Morris Workshops, Jennifer continues to inspire us with her extraordinary imagination, attention to detail and passion for sharing the beautiful possibilities of paper and stitch.
