Workshop Description:
Join popular Beth Morris Workshops tutor and local artist Scott Uden for an exciting and energetic full-day painting workshop inspired by the extraordinary Welsh landscapes and seascapes of J.M.W. Turner.
As a young artist, Turner travelled extensively through Wales, inspired by its dramatic landscapes, ancient ruins and ever-changing weather. Throughout his career, he continued to explore the power of light, atmosphere and the sublime, pushing the boundaries of traditional landscape painting to create works filled with movement, energy and emotion.
Taking Turner’s Welsh landscapes and dramatic seascapes as our starting point, you’ll explore how shifting weather and atmospheric conditions can completely transform a landscape. Stormy skies. Turbulent seas. Fleeting light. Mist, rain and movement. You’ll look at the powerful relationship between sea, sky and land and discover how to harness some of that energy and mood within your own work.
The day will begin with a series of fun and dynamic warm-ups designed to loosen you up and get you comfortable working with a variety of media.
Then, in true Scott Uden style, you’ll break away from convention.
You might rip paper, run paintings under the tap, splash tea and coffee, throw ink and introduce unexpected marks and textures. Experimentation isn’t simply encouraged - it’s a huge part of the day. You’ll discover how allowing materials to behave unpredictably can create atmosphere, movement and those wonderful accidental marks that bring a landscape to life.
Throughout the workshop, you’ll develop your understanding of composition, colour, tone, mark-making, texture, light and atmosphere, gradually bringing these techniques together to create your own expressive Welsh landscapes and coastal scenes. Scott will demonstrate his processes and work alongside you, offering individual tuition, encouragement and plenty of opportunities to experiment.
A selection of Turner imagery and Welsh coastal references will be provided, but you are also very welcome to bring your own photographs of favourite Welsh seascapes or coastal locations to inspire your work.
Suitable for beginners and improvers, this is a rich, exploratory day for anyone wanting to build real painting skills while learning to loosen up their approach. It’s about understanding the creative journey rather than simply concentrating on the finished piece.
And if you haven’t managed to secure a place on one of Scott’s sold-out weekly courses, this is a brilliant opportunity to spend an entire day learning from him. A chance to experiment. To take a few creative risks. To develop your painting skills and discover a freer, more expressive way of working.

Scott Euden is a Welsh artist focused on Landscape/Seascape painting and recreating the sublime beauty of the natural landscape. A dynamic approach to diverse subject matter, intuitive mark-making and an unconventional interpretation in acrylics from observation, experience and memory.
Scott creates compelling images of the ‘natural’ landscape in Wales and works toward private commissions and public exhibitions. He is also a very popular art tutor and runs two weekly art sessions at Beth Morris Workshops. Scott’s ‘Future Artist’ class for teens and his adult ‘Landscape Painting’ class is always full. So, if you were hoping to join one of those, but not been lucky so far, this is your chance to do a full days workshop with the man himself..
