Visible Mending - The Beauty of Broken Things with Saffron Darby
Sunday 15th February 2026
10:00-4:00
Adult workshop
(but GCSE and A-Level students are very welcome to join in. It will be a great skills workshop for those taking creative subjects)
WORKSHOP:
Visible Mending - The Beauty of Broken Things with Saffron Darby
This gentle, hands-on workshop celebrates the art of repair, giving new life to the clothes you already love.
Led by textile artist Saffron Darby, you’ll explore the many ways to mend, darn, patch and stitch with care and creativity. The day will have the relaxed feel of a “meet, make and mend” gathering a place to share stories, compare projects, and enjoy the quiet rhythm of sewing together.
In the morning, Saffron will demonstrate a range of visible mending and repair techniques. You’ll create your own set of sample pieces to learn and practise new skills from decorative darning to creative patching and hand embroidery.
In the afternoon, you’ll turn your attention to something personal - a piece from your own wardrobe that needs a little love. With Saffron’s guidance, you’ll repair it thoughtfully, transforming it from neglected to cherished once more.
This is slow, mindful making at its best: collaborative, sustainable, and quietly joyful. A celebration of imperfection, and a romantic way to spend a February weekend, in honour of the love of old clothes.
Artist / Maker / Tutor:
Saffron Darby is a clothes designer by trade, with over twenty years’ experience designing for renowned fashion and lifestyle brands including Toast. During her decade as Senior Designer at Toast, Saffron honed an enduring design ethos, creating simple, modern, and functional pieces intended to last for years to come.
Now co-owner of Brown in Town, a Tailor & Atelier based in Bristol, Saffron continues to champion a slower, more thoughtful approach to making and living. Deeply inspired by sustainability, textile longevity, and the resurgence of visible mending, she founded Meet Make Mend (MMM) in 2019 - a slow-stitch mending collective hosted at Bristol Textile Quarter (BTQ).
Since March 2024, Saffron has also been facilitating Meet Make Mend workshops at Fforest Glow Sew and Gather, extending her ethos of mindful mending to new communities.
Saffron is known for her warm, inclusive facilitation style, expert at holding space for others to sit, mend, and reflect. Participants frequently describe MMM as therapeutic and grounding, a rare pause in the rush of modern life.
“I’m convinced that sewing can be good for your mental well-being. It lets people take a breath and slow down, keep their hands busy and focus. Stitching can be so restorative, almost like a meditation. It’s about just letting your mind go and seeing where your needle and thread takes you.” Saffron
What is included in the ticket price?
All equipment and materials that you need for the workshop are included. But you will need to bring your own item of clothing to mend in the afternoon.
Some people like to bring fabrics and threads but the studio is packed with all sorts of inspirational materials that you may access.
Tea, coffee and biscuits.
Where will the workshops take place?
In Beth’s inspirational studio at Insole Court, Cardiff. CF5 2LN
