Adult workshop

(but GCSE and A-Level students are very welcome to join in. It will be a great skills workshop for those taking art)

WORKSHOP:

This workshop is for the sketchbook enthusiast. Those who want to learn to be free with mark making and embrace the page without fear or perfection. Rebecca Harry is an experienced illustrator but loves nothing more than the freedom of walking and capturing what she sees in her little sketchbook. Using soft pastels and coloured pencils you will be guided around the grounds, coffee shop, mansion house and community gardens of Insole Court and encouraged to capture the small simple moments you see on the page.

Rebecca will also show her children’s book work briefly, and the preparatory sketches she makes for the artwork which is detailed and on loose sheets of layout paper. Understanding how her working process is so different to her sketch booking is key to her success. Rebecca will talk through her need to use them in a different way, how this style informs her illustration work, but also her personal development and the media she uses.

During this workshop you will be provided with a small sketchbook to work in. You will learn about creating a sketch, backgrounds, foregrounds, temperatures of colours and detail - all of which affects the sketch. There will be plenty of little demonstrations to explain.

Artist / Maker / Tutor:

Rebecca Harry is a children’s book illustrator living and working in Cardiff. She has illustrated baby books, middle grade novels and Picture Books and is currently finishing the illustrations for her 50th children’s book.

Rebecca works mostly in the medium of acrylic on hot press watercolour paper and her work has been published across the world in more than 20 languages.

The work made in her studio keeps her occupied most of the time but Rebecca likes nothing better than a walk in the fresh air, taking with her a little sketch book and a small amount of drawing equipment to capture the changing seasons. This gives her a chance to break from her commercial style and make freer marks.
