I am thrilled to announce that we have some wonderful artists and tutors visiting Beth Morris Workshops in the first half of 2020. I can’t wait to welcome you to my little community art school in the most beautiful location for creativity...
Each workshop has been priced to include all materials and equipment, tea, coffee and cake. The workshops take place in my studio in Cardiff, The Dairy at Insole Court

SKETCHBOOK KEEPING WEEKEND WITH LEE JOHN PHILLIPS

Lee John Phillips is a freelance illustrator and avid sketchbook keeper. Lee has been shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, the John Ruskin Prize, Sir Kyffin Williams Drawing Prize and is a winner of the professionals’ category of the Welsh Drawing Book award. He is an art educator with 13 years experience teaching at secondary school level.
Lee is currently drawing the entire contents of his late grandfather’s toolshed.
WORKSHOP: Join Lee at the wonderful Insole court for a weekend’s introduction to Sketchbook keeping. You will explore a range of materials and techniques and learn methods of recording from still-life objects and the surrounding environment to start filling an A5 sketchbook with all manner of loveliness.
The course will encourage you to continue on your sketchbook journey after the weekend and provide an overview of a broad range of experiences with a basic selection of art materials.

WORKSHOP: Find out about design and branding and how it can help you create and grow a business you are proud of. In a culture that is obsessed with how things look and great customer service let me break down the different elements of your brand and how you can improve them. This workshop would be suitable if you already have a business or if you have a business idea that you are hoping to launch. You will need to bring a phone and your IPad or laptop. PAPER HEARTS WITH DECKLE & FORGE

Molly and Claire are the paper creatives behind many of the paper installations that you will see popping up in and around Cardiff. They have produced installations for Warrier Women Events, Ripple Living and Blossom and Nectar. They really are the key duo to go with if you want to enhance your brand or event in an ethical sustainable and highly creative way.
WORKSHOP: Join Deckle & Forge for a fun day learning to cut, score, fold and glue paper. You will be creating a gorgeous geometric hanging heart, table feature and bunting. Along with this you can also construct your own bespoke Valentines pop-up card to take home to your loved ones. The girls are also advocates of self love, so you could spend the whole day making hearts for yourself to fill your home With all the feels. There will be a selection of colours to choose from for each product and you will leave feeling pretty impressed and proud of yourselves and full of LOVE ready for Valentine’s Day!
EDGELANDS - LAYERS OF STITCH AND MARKS WITH CAS HOLMES

Cas is an artist, teacher and author living in the U.K. I trained in painting and photography at the University of Creative Arts, Kent in the early eighties, followed by further scholarships for research in Japan and India.
Cas likes to use discarded items, waste material that are no longer considered useful. Her work is informed by her drawings and photographs reflecting personal narratives, places visited, stories of her grandmother, old and forgotten textiles. Found materials and cloth (fragments of lace, old clothing, domestic fabrics) have a history’. These she breaks down, tears, and cuts, until they are re-assembled to create something more meaningful.
WORKSHOP: A typical workshop starts with a practical session to experimenting mark-making and other colour application techniques Cas uses in conjunction with her found surfaces. This is followed by an exploration of methods used to join pieces together with adhesive mediums and stitch. As you progress participants will incorporate your own ideas as well as creating sketches, samples and notes for further reference. Participants will leave the course with a sound basis of processes and working samplers, or foundation pieces which they can continue to build on and develop at home.
Possibilities will arise to create complex layered dimensional machine or hand stitched 'drawings' You will explore marks onto lightweight fabrics such as cottons, muslins, silk organza and explore paste methods to combine the layers of cloth and paper. Creative exercises with reference to the surrounding landscape and collected plants and objects and their application in relation to different fabrics (torn and old materials such as handkerchiefs, clothing and vintage fabrics) and found materials/paper will further help to develop personal expression and add meaning to your work. Your 'visual narrative' will take inspiration from the garden, architecture, wildlflowers and wildlife or your own subject references
NATURAL DYING AND BOTANICAL INKS WITH CATHERINE LEWIS

Textile artist, dyer, printer and ink-maker Catherine Lewis makes all her healthy artwork and handmade inks at her workshop in Cardiff, Wales. She is inspired by the natural beauty, local materials and the post-industrial vistas of her native Welsh landscape. Her work combines sustainable, handmade and recycled materials with both traditional and contemporary techniques. Catherine is able to dye and print a wide variety of materials. She is highly skilled in colour matching and has an extensive knowledge of the various dyes and fibres required to achieve the best results.
WORKSHOP: On this spring weekend of botanical loveliness, Cath will first give an introduction to natural plant and food dyes. You will learn about cloth types, eco-prints, hammered prints, mordants, and will make and dye a sample range to keep and refer back to. On day two Cath will demonstrate botanical ink making, as well as explaining the fascinating hand techniques and natural materials involved in her work.You will source and make your own ink, draw and paint with crafted tools and then get to play and draw with your own inks made from plants, flower, berries and scrap metals. You'll make beautiful marks and patterns onto cloth and paper, which will go into your own little natures colours sample book.

LUXURY STITCHED PAPER LAMPSHADES WITH JENNIFER COLLIER

Paper pioneer Jennifer Collier creates exquisite sculptures from vintage recycled materials in conjunction with stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles. The papers serve as both the inspiration and the media for the work, with the narrative suggesting the forms. Through this marriage of unlikely materials old papers are transformed into something truly unique, delicate and complex.
Most recently Jennifer has been collecting rarely used, heritage stitches and discovering how to translate the art of lost stitches onto paper, as these techniques are an important part of our creative heritage and she wants to continue to invest time in them to keep them in the present, offering them onto future generations. Jennifer is giving new life to things that would otherwise go unused, unloved or be thrown away…
Jennifer completed a BA (hons) in Textiles (Print, Knit and Weave) in 1999 at Manchester Metropolitan University, is internationally exhibited, and has had her work featured in over 60 magazines and over 15 books to date.
WORKSHOP: Create your own beautiful recycled paper lampshade using lovely vintage papers and by upcycling existing frames. You will be shown all steps of the process, from how to create a pattern to fit your frame, to how to stitch the vintage papers together to form the shade. You will be taught embellishment techniques, such as embossing, stamping, and various hand and machine stitches to decorate your light shade. All materials are provides, but please bring along any special maps, papers, or books you may wish to incorporate and a lampshade frame to up-cycle (panel lampshades as pictured, rather than barrel) or Jennifer will have some available to buy on the day.

Lee John Phillips is a founding member of Narberth Whittling Association, freelance illustrator and creative educator. When he’s not drawing everything in his late grandfather’s shed, he’s carving wooden spoons.
Join Lee at Insole Court for an introduction to spoon carving. You will learn about the tools you need to carve green wood and the safe cutting techniques to effectively remove waste. As well as the practical approaches, you will discover how to navigate grain orientation, what wood to use, the best places to source it and how best to treat it.
You will start the weekend roughing out a spoon blank with an axe before refining the shape with a knife and a hook. You will make a cooking spoon on the Saturday and a more complex eating spoon on the Sunday.
Spaces are very limited, so get in there quick!
